Yes, I have a similar issue on High Sierra, I'm told a fix deleting a file (credit to user bobzippymail). I know this is an olf thread but pretty high up on google so hopefully this helps someone.

Delete "backgrounditems.btm" file under this path, and then restart your mac.

      /Users/$your_user/Library/Application Support/com.apple.backgroundtaskmanagementagent/backgrounditems.btm

      Link: https://community.spotify.com/t5/Desktop-Mac/Spotify-crashing-at-startup-on-MacOS-High-Sierra/td-p/2260942

My issue is similar that it flashes on for a second and then breaks and stays off. When I reboot it starts up and works fine, but then it'll turn off, usually triggered by pressing one of the function keys like volume, brightness etc.

If anyone has a fix for this PLEASE help me, I can't really live without flux :(:(

Oh also it seems that when it randomly turns back one for a second, it's triggered by moving the mouse, but I can't turn it on by moving the mouse, it's just occasionally (every 5-10 minutes?), moving the mouse flicks it on.

What happens if you open the f.lux menu to the left of your system clock? Are you able to access it? Can you quit from there? Pics of what I mean are here: https://justgetflux.com/news/pages/macquickstart/

Is Flux + 10.13.3/4 causing these crazy MBP crashes?

If you're on a dual-GPU Macbook, I made a note in a related thread about disabling our ICC profile writer, which may help:

      https://forum.justgetflux.com/topic/6255/flux-10-13-3-freezes-mbp-10-times-a-day

See if this stops the crashes?

I think this machine has two GPUs, so f.lux is writing an ICC profile every so often to avoid flashing when switching between GPUs. Assuming that this profile causes problems in the new macOS, let's try disabling that:

      https://justgetflux.com/news/2014/10/28/profile.html

What you can do, from Terminal:

      defaults write org.herf.Flux disableProfile 1

@crishoj Could you try reinstalling from the homepage (https://justgetflux.com)? We shipped a newer version (but have not updated everyone yet)

I have the exact same problem and can't find anything that solves it. It has been doing it for a couple of days straight now and always starts 'late' at night (after 9/10)

We are working on a version with more than two settings so we had to pull this out for a bit.

For now adjusting the "sunset" setting to be a bit stronger may help. When the sun's up, dimming your screen shouldn't make as big a difference.

      @herf

It appears only "About f.lux" and "Preferences..." menu items don't recognize clicking. The rest of drop-down menu items is OK.

You may want to take a look at the video screen-capture I uploaded to YT.

Offering advice on protection from macular degeneration goes outside the scope of this forum (and software), unfortunately.

One thing you might want to look at is our resource on spectral measurements of different light sources and interventions (like physical filters or software settings). https://fluxometer.com/rainbow/ So you can see that most LED backlit smartphones and screens don't give off much ultraviolet light, but they do have a spike in the blue range. You can do some research there, and hopefully your ophthalmologist should be able to help you find an intervention that would be best for your needs and your eyes.
