f.lux won't start on Mojave

I am using macOS 10.14.2 (18C54) on a MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016). The f.lux application claims to be version 39.987 when I look at it in Finder.
f.lux has worked fine for me for a while, but recently I restarted my computer for the first time in a long time, and f.lux didn't seem to load at startup. I tried launching it again, that did nothing, I uninstalled it, downloaded it again (even though the version hadn't changed) and reinstalled it. Still no luck.
When I launch f.lux, I see that there is a process visible in Activity Monitor, but there is no f.lux widget in the status menu at the top of the screen. Simply "quitting" the process in Activity Monitor does nothing, I have to force quit it.
