after Win10 April Update - flux sometimes swich on/off for seconds

  • Just after Windows 10 April Update I noticed f.lux switch on/off itself for no reason. No pattern. Screen blink between standard and night mode.

Hardware: Surface 4 Pro with all latest updates and flux 4.66. WIndows' own 'night mode' is turned off.

    Any help? :)

    =====

5/8/18: Note from Michael Herf: Windows 1803 appears to have a new bug that resets color settings every time a device is added to the system, including bluetooth and USB. We are figuring out what to do to fix this.

Also, we have posted a beta that reduces the impact by verifying the color change once per second: https://justgetflux.com/flux-setup4.exe

  • I'm having the same problem too. Is anyone also having the same problem as well? Perhaps this is due to the newly implemented "Smart Scaling" option? I have disabled it, but sometimes Flux stills turns off.

Hardware: Thinkpad T470 with Flux 4.66. Windows night mode turned off.

  • Seems like I solved my problem by uninstalling the app and then re-installing from the windows store.

    Hope it helps

I updated my Surface Book and got a couple flashes with f.lux, but without a predictable pattern. They did go away after the first few minutes.

However this update managed to disable my keyboard every few hours, and also seems to fail to come back from standby, so I've downgraded for now!

  • f.lux team

Ok, and on my Thinkpad (which is a little older) there is no problem. Can anyone with a problem please post driver info (f.lux options, button at the bottom?)

  • I'm having the same problem on my Yoga 720. Any suggestions much appreciated!

  • f.lux team

Can any of you post driver info? Specifically I'm wondering if anyone is having trouble without an NVIDIA + Intel combination (they used to call this "optimus" but maybe there is a new word for it).

So far, it is likely: Yoga 720 has NVIDIA, my Surface Book 2 has NVIDIA, some T470 have NVIDIA.

My Thinkpad (without the issue) is Intel-only.

  • @herf

My Yoga 720 driver info - no NVIDIA card, Intel-only

    Intel Corporation 23.20.16.4973: Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 (20180228)

    Generic PnP Monitor, 294 x 165mm, built 2016

    G=0.331055 0.618164

    W=0.312500 0.328125

sRGB gamut: 85%, AdobeRGB gamut: 59%

    Windows Build: 17134

  • f.lux team

good to know - so all Intel 620?

  • @herf Yessir. Also I will note that this windows update has been giving me other problems that I don't think is related to f.lux but could be - every so often my screen freezes and forces me to close/open my laptop. Haven't tried disabling f.lux to see if that's the issue yet, but may try it sometime.

  • f.lux team

I have heard they are fixing the "Chrome" lockup next Tuesday? This is why I downgraded for the moment: https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/3/17315180/microsoft-windows-10-april-2018-update-chrome-crash-freezing-problems

  • @herf Oh wow thanks for sharing. Didn't hear about this.

  • I'm getting this issue whenever I switch on/off my bluetooth speakers (oddly enough). It's an old laptop, info below -

    Intel i5 - 2410M
    Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000 - driver version 9.17.10.4459
NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M - driver version 22.21.13.8476

  • @DaveJ Huh, that could be it for me; I use Bluetooth headphones all the time.

  • This post is deleted!

  • f.lux team

Anyone else think it's related to Bluetooth? If you can switch off Bluetooth entirely, does the flashing stop?

  • @herf I'm not seeing "flashing", flux basically pauses for a couple of seconds each time something connected via Bluetooth is turned on/off. Also happens when connecting/disconnecting a usb stick.

  • f.lux team

Got it... so I'm thinking any time a device is added (and maybe removed) from the system?

  • @herf Yeah seems to be. Just tried and it also happens with a USB mouse and keyboard.

Not sure if it's relevant but I'm using multiple monitors. Also, clicking anywhere on the screen immediately brings flux back (it comes back by itself after a few seconds).

  • f.lux team

Okay thank you for this. Think this is the answer and I will see if I can get it fixed. :)

  • Hello,
After trying to remove the usb mouse it does indeed stop f.lux, until a few seconds or a click on the screen.
But I have small occasional freezes without removing anything, I was not able to replicate them but they seem to be more frequent when I navigate in the computer settings through notification panel on the dock (might be cyclic and because I go there much, could look like it's linked.)

I always have the bluetooth on and a second monitor connected.
I'm using a surface book with intel processor and nvidia graphic card.
    Hope it can help !
I'll update if I see anything else.

This is basically been my exact experience as well. I've noticed that the glitch tends to happen when I initiate a new computer process like opening the computer panel or switching between/opening new apps and less when I'm just staying in Word for extended periods of time. Though this is just a tendency and it sometimes happens regardless (I wonder if notifications or other background processes have to do with it?).

  • Seems working after uninstall/reboot/reinstall classic windows version.

  • Err nope, finally it disabling randomly during seconds...

  • f.lux team

@Lyon-St-Clair left notes at top - Windows seems to have a bug that resets color anytime a device is added

  • Any update to this? I'm really missing the reliability of flux!

  • f.lux team

I am hoping for a fix from Microsoft, but we could do a patch that adjusts the Windows color profile to avoid the problem, if that doesn't land very soon. This code is very well tested on the Mac, but Windows has a larger variety of color profiles (so this is why I am not rushing to do this).

How many times per hour are you having a problem? We could also temporarily turn back on a system that "fixes" adjusted profiles every second, like v3 did.

  • @herf For me it occurs every time another Bluetooth device connects or disconnect. It does with my Airpods, Surface Dial, Logitech MX Ergo etc.

  • Per hour? Hard to say, and it varies, but when its bad it can be as often as every 5 minutes. I would say the average is around 5 times an hour - regardless if I'm attempting to connect a device or not. Whenever it happens I just open and close the notifications panel and it fixes itself - its just annoying and seriously inconvenient lol.

  • @herf That might help a bit, but I don't think it will solve the issue. I get this issue just using a custom colour profile, without flux. But instead of it just disabling for awhile until you change windows, you get rapid flickering between the colour profile turning off and on, which is probably what you'll end up with if you make flux more aggressively try to set its colour profile.

It also seems to be an issue with the Intel drivers, as it doesn't happen when using the generic drivers that come with Windows (although I also wasn't able to apply my colour profile while using that, but at least flux worked).

  • f.lux team

We found a way to check that our profile is installed efficiently, so the new beta is verifying it once per second.

To download, either join the beta (in "about") or download here:
    https://justgetflux.com/flux-setup4.exe

In the future, we might adjust the system ICM/WCS file as we do on the Mac, but this would take a longer beta period to get right, so we are putting this one up to reduce the impact.
