LIFX in f.lux? How do I set it up?
-
Mine are working perfectly, but I do have some requests! I made my requests at the end of this post.
I have two brand-new LIFX A19 lights that I bought from Amazon (shipped and sold by Amazon). They're my first smart lights.
I didn't have to do anything to make them work with f.lux. So, it was a complete surprise. I've had my lights since Saturday, but I didn't know f.lux could control my lights until today. All I wanted to do was to make them work with the LIFX iOS app and with Apple HomeKit for Siri voice control. In fact, if it weren't for today's beta release of f.lux, I wouldn't have discovered that f.lux can control my lights because I always go through all of f.lux's options when a new version is released.
My setup is, Windows 7 directly connected to the network via an Ethernet cable (that is, I'm not on Wi-Fi - my computer is connected directly). I have the Xfinity-supplied Cisco DPC3939 XB3 cable modem/router/digital phone modem all-in-one gateway device. To make f.lux control my lights, all I had to do was go into the options and enable the option for it.
Here are my requests:
- Try to find a way to make it possible for f.lux to set the LIFX lights to color temperatures warmer than 2500K. This might not be possible because that's the limit of the LIFX iOS app (its range in the app is 2500K - 9000K, so I assume the lights don't understand anything outside that range), but I think it can be done if you somehow make f.lux switch over to controlling the hue of the lights rather than the color temperature in order to simulate the selected color temperature. For a very quick example of what I mean, an f.lux setting of 800K would just result in setting the LIFX lights to red.
- Make the lights go to 6500K when f.lux is disabled.
- Make the lights dim when using the Alt+Page Down keyboard shortcut
- Set the lights to red when switching to Darkroom Mode.
- Try to make the LIFX lights match the current color effect. Specifically, Soft White, Blue Sky, Macular Pigment, Emerald City, Civil Twilight.
- Try to make the lights go to 6500K upon exiting f.lux completely. I know the vast majority of your users don't exit f.lux completely for any length of time like I do, but still.
- While clicking and dragging the color slider, try to get f.lux to change the color in real time instead of only sending the color temperature when releasing the slider.
- When pressing and holding Alt+Shift+Page Up or Alt+Shift+Page Down, make the LIFX lights change their color temperature in real time instead of only sending the color temperature when releasing the keys.

hi, i know this post is old but i would like to try out your iftt applet. the thing is when i try to turn it on and save the settings i get an error “your applet is invalid see error below”, no error is below that i can see. if possible would you be able to tell me what settings you used so i can create my own possibly. so just to get this right also all i would have to do is turn on the light and the applet would already have ran, so that the light would be a warm incandescent temperature.

Are you seeking support from the LIFX company? This forum is for f.lux. Maybe you want support from IFTT:

When i start my computer (windows 10) f.lux connects with my lifx bulbs and changes their color accordingly to the time of day. But this only happens on startup, after that the bulbs don't synchronize anymore, they just stay with the same color and brightness that doesn't change over time.

@herf Hi, as per the original requester, I would also like to know how to link my LIFX lights to the f.lux software? I also see there is a checkbox to use LIFX lights, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Could you kindly advise?
-
@rpmillar Currently I think it supports the "v2" protocol - do you maybe have one of the original lamps? It also needs to have broadcast access on the LAN (since it talks to all the lights), some routers could block that.
-
@herf Thanks very much for that. I have 8 brand new LIFX Mini Day & Dusk lights which just arrived from Amazon, and which work great via my Alexa devices. So I assume these support the "v2" protocal you've mentioned. As for "breadcast access on the LAN", how do I enable that? I don't see any settings in f.lux that relate.

is this a windows only thing? where can I find this checkbox? I jsut got some Lifx bulbs and would love to try this

@alexhughes312 yes it is currently Windows-only.

I have this exact same problem. I have lifx light strips and different models of the globes. They all work fine when starting up the program but in order for them to update constantly like the hue globes/led strips do the program must be closed and re-opened...

@tech2urdoor thanks we will check it out

I'm also having these issues, sometimes it works the whole day, others only on start up. Is the F.lux smartlighting control logged somewhere?
Thanks
Using the beta 4.105 -
@sampa82 Also on the release version (4.104)

Can I ask why this is windows only? There's a lot of people who use macs who would like to use this feature. In fact I would be willing to pay for the app. However, I don't want to buy a windows computer. I've actually been waiting a while for flux for a long time (years) to improve the app on macs to include this feature and it hasn't happened yet.
Do I need to look for an alternative app that does stuff like this on macs (not even sure if one exists)? I'm aware that flux has had disagreements with apple about the use of the app on iPhones, but seems there's nothing from apple that is holding you back from making flux's mac app more complete.

@herf I'm still experiencing this issue where I have to restart f.lux to get it to update my LIFX light colors. Thanks.
-
I'm having problems with LIFX as well. I just got my LIFX mini day & dusk and set it up. I can control it with the Windows app, with the Android app, but not with f.lux. I do all of this without using the LIFX cloud thing (so LAN only).
They're all in the same LAN and subnet as my PC that runs f.lux.
I don't get why this wouldn't work?
Router is FRITZ!Box 7490

I see that the lifx lights support is still green, but it's a start!
It would be interesting to be able to discover the available lights although it is not necessary.
But it would be very nice to be able to decide to affect only some of the lights by name and not all as it happens now or even to indicate their group and how we want the effect of temperature control of the lights if instead of changing directly we want something softer using a scene that makes the transition over a longer period of time from one tone to another automatically and smoother, so f.lux would only have to launch a broadcast only once to the bulbs every day to have a perfect transition every time.Python help on how to do it
