Recently I've started to have an issue where I'm playing a game in the evening, and the whole screen will go black for about 5 seconds. When it recovers, the f.lux effect is no longer enabled - although I think it may go back to 'normal' (ie reddened) over time.

I think you may have Night Light enabled in the Windows settings.

"Schedule night light" is turned off.

This may be a hardware failure then.

I'm not sure why that would be a hardware failure. It only happens under those very specific circumstances. I am not using cutting edge hardware - it's Intel integrated graphics. I have no issues with hardware instability.

Does it do it without f.lux installed?

@TwoCables I was gaming today with f.lux disabled and the issue did not occur. It had previously occurred in every recent session around the same time of day, when I'd had f.lux enabled.

What do you have for a graphics adapter? Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA?

I'm thinking there's some setting in the graphic adapter's control panel that you have to toggle.

Another possible culprit could be Windows. Go into the f.lux settings and turn on "Always use Windows internal color table".
