Strange behavior dimming external monitor during the day

I'm a technical trainer. While projecting a PowerPoint presentation on the external monitor, I noticed the other day that the external monitor's picture was switching between full brightness and partially dimmed as I dragged a DOS prompt window between the primary and external screens. There's a point when the DOS window was about 20% in the external screen and 80% in the primary screen that the brightness just toggles. This made me realize that the external screen had been "dimmed" the entire time I'd been giving the presentation. I had to exit flux to restore normal brightness. WTF?
