UWP f.lux

Is this official? How long has this been a thing?

How does it compare to the win32 one in background resource usage, general performance, etc?

Which one would you officially suggest to a Windows 10 user?

  • @nobelharvards It lack some feature.

  • Yeah, I noticed this version too. Is this official? If so, I might download it.

  • I think it's an official app, all the link to official site.

  • @llity Just because it links to the website doesn't mean it's official. A lot of scam apps link to the official website to look real. I won't believe this version is real until staff approves of it.

  • @HTV04 I test it work fine but miss some feature, and because it downloads from the store, it is a safe app.

  • @llity I know it might work as intended and look safe, but I still want confirmation from staff. I'm just paranoid like that :P

  • f.lux team

Happy to confirm this is official! We just launched. (It's amazing how nice and helpful some companies can be.)

The main difference is that 'expand color range' isn't exactly the same. Color temperatures below 3400K may show up in screenshots in Anniversary. On Centennial it should work correctly. We will do everything we can to keep this release at feature parity with the main release.

  • Ok, thanks! Just one more thing, should I uninstall the Win32 version then install the UWP version?

  • I'm just asking because I installed f.lux yesterday without restarting, and I'm wondering if it's safe to uninstall f.lux without restarting, and that the UWP version will work after the desktop version was installed and uninstalled.

@HTV04 Yes go ahead and uninstall - UWP should win on startup but having just one seems like a better idea. Let us know if you have any trouble!

  • @lorna Ok, thanks! And just a heads up, Microsoft might ban the app from the Windows Store in fear that it might be messing with computers' settings. If this happens, you should upload the .appx for people to sideload. This app is really cool, and is way better than the default Night Light.

  • f.lux team

@HTV04 Thanks - there is an approval process for the store (we've been through it), so we don't expect to be banned. ^_^

  • @lorna Hopefully it won't get banned. F.lux is amazing!

@nobelharvards Thanks for checking in. It says who up/downvoted things if you hover over the number. Maybe it only says that for admins. If it wasn't you, how weird - perhaps our forum software has gone a bit mad.

Hey you're right, it does show it if you hover over the number. I didn't know that.

  • @lorna How will updating work on the f.lux UWP? There's an option to install updates automatically in the app, but doesn't the Windows Store update it? Or will f.lux have its own updater and the Store won't update it?

  • f.lux team

@HTV04 Windows Store will update it. We're still new at this whole Being Allowed in an App Store business, so I'm not sure how fast it happens, but it definitely happens.

  • @lorna But what does the "install updates automatically" option do? If the Windows Store updates it, then is this option a leftover from the executable? Would it still work if an update was released to the executable version?

  • f.lux team

@HTV04 So basically, not much - the option there now will turn the readme on and off. We'll change that next build (then we can all see how the update process happens...)

  • Keep in mind, version 4.32 ("4.32.0.0") is a beta version.

  • @lorna What do you mean by the "readme"? Isn't that usually a text file that comes with a program explaining about it? Sorry if Im asking too much, I'm just really confused πŸ˜‚.

  • f.lux team

@HTV04 We should take the option out of the menu, because it doesn't do anything because Windows Store will handle it. It's a bug. ^_^

  • @lorna Oh, ok. Thanks! I was just confused there, lol. Though you should probably release an update before another update to the f.lux executable is released, as it the UWP might try to download the update and might break itself. I might be wrong, but you never know πŸ˜….

Windows checks the version number. If it's the same, then a download/update won't be attempted.

  • @TwoCables I know that, I'm just saying that the update system from the executable might've been carried over when it was converted, and the UWP trying to download the executable's update might break it. But the f.lux developers probably removed the code for the update system after the conversion and accidentally left the "install updates automatically" option.

    Yeah, Lorna said it's disabled.

  • Hello,

just a quick question and possibly a bug report :)

Is there a way to disable the notification when entering a fullscreen app? I enabled "Disable for fullscreen apps" because I don't want the dim when watching movies. Unfortunately I get that notification everyday.

I tried to disable notifications for f.lux in the notification settings of Windows 10 itself. But it seems to get reenabled as soon as the next notification is displayed. This is probably a bug I guess?

    Thanks for any help ;)

//edit: Well, also found out that I can't really disable the bedtime thingy and constantly had to change the time to make it work. Hope there will be a switch to disable in later betas. I'm back to v3.12 for now.

Well, you did make the Apple Jailbreak f.lux program, so you're close! Maybe google will help work with you as well, or is the hardware currently too diverse?

  • f.lux team

@Tungsten_smooth Funny bit of f.lux trivia that most people don't know: An Apple executive told us to make a jailbreak version, back in 2009, see if we could demonstrate the demand. So that's actually why we did it... Turns out there was some demand I guess.

  • @lorna WOW! Now that's ... shocking. I hope they add in your options, and naming scheme for the colors. It's just not the same without all the information about sleep on the program. I'm glad they asked you to make it, but to then take away what makes your program easy to use and understand just seems rude and uncaring. Ah well, looking forward to other mobile platform updates...

I have a feature on my phone that is almost like f.lux, but it's too yellow, and just looks very strange because I know it's not right, I could filter it with other apps but I'm thinking of just rooting my phone if possible. It would be so much nicer to have deeper orange options and a transition too, this one just jumps to the setting.

  • f.lux team

@Tungsten_smooth I can't say I agree with you there - I hope they ultimately do the right thing and allow f.lux into the app store. There is a lot of research and hard work that needs to be done, not the kind of thing you can just copy....

  • sir, can you give a button to restore a default settings

  • f.lux team

@helloabhishek Choose "recommended settings" in preferences to return to defaults for all versions of f.lux.

  • @lorna thanks

  • @lorna A new update for f.lux came out. Can you update it for the UWP as well? Thanks!

Like she said, they can't control when Microsoft rolls out their updates. I would bet they gave Microsoft their update as soon as it was available.

  • @TwoCables Microsoft doesn't control the updates. The developers of an app would release an update, and it would be checked then released. I don't know if that's what you meant, but if you were talking about Microsoft being the one releasing the updates for the f.lux UWP, then that's incorrect.

  • @HTV04 I know the checking process might take a while too, so if they did release it to the UWP version, then it's probably still being checked right now. I was just asking if they released it for the UWP.

  • f.lux team

We will release very soon - thanks for bearing with. Minor updates.

What? I know how it works. lol Did you really think that I believe that Microsoft is the one creating updates for the UWP f.lux? I'm not stupid! Come on, man. Why would you think that I was saying that? As I said, Lorna and Michael can't control when Microsoft rolls out the updates that they give to Microsoft. I would bet they gave Microsoft their update as soon as they finished it. Obviously they haven't yet since Lorna just said they will soon, but STILL. Even if they had given Microsoft their new version, I think it's still not going to be an instantaneous update.

  • So version 4.33 never made it to Windows Store, and now 4.34 is out, but Windows Store version is still 4.32.

So it seems to me it's better to uninstall the Windows Store version and get the updates directly from website. Or is this going to get fixed any time soon?

If you want to stay extremely current with the Beta versions, then probably so. However, they will not be updating anywhere near this frequently once they finalize this version.

Also, as you can see from the update page, it says "These pages are popping up too early for Windows App Store users. Sorry, we’re working on a fix!"
