[Sleep] So... Reddit has a /r/Sleep section for people having trouble sleeping.
-
@TwoCables You should try it more often it's really nice.
-
@f-lux-team should I send people with sleep issues from reddit to here? Good idea or no?

800K with my monitor dimmed is perfect for me. I hate when everything is inverted during Darkroom Mode, so I'm not going to try something that I already hate.
-
@TwoCables Alright then. I think it works well for reading text but I understand if you're not a fan of the inverted look.

It's not that I'm not a fan, it's that it doesn't work well for me at all. I can read text just fine with f.lux at 800K and my monitor dimmed to around 10%. Just because something works extremely well for you, it doesn't mean that you should try to get everyone to do it. I never said anything about being unhappy with the way things are when I go to 800K with a dim monitor, so this was unsolicited advice. Most people don't like unsolicited advice at all, especially when they weren't seeking any advice at all in the first place.
I could go around telling everyone to do everything I'm doing because of how much I love the results, but if it has absolutely nothing to do with what they're asking (or if they aren't asking for any advice in the first place), then it could cause people to be kind of annoyed with me a little bit. You gotta try to stick to the subject. You know: if they're not asking, then don't tell them. Well actually, this is a general rule. I know that there are times where you just know that what you're offering will be loved by the other person. Those are somewhat-rare exceptions.

I'm not understand where I'm offering unsolicited advice, I was just letting you know that I understand if you don't like the look of bright red text on a dark background (or white text) as it's not as comfortable to read for you or whatever the case may be.
Edit: I get it now, I was recommending basically everyone invert their colors. Yeah, I could see that being too much, I guess that's what Darkroom mode is for.

I never said anything about what my opinion is of 800K without inverting the colors, thus you're giving me unsolicited advice. Also, I don't see why you even brought it up. I thought we were talking about a forum for sleep problems. Then out of nowhere, you're recommending that we all invert our colors just because you love it. That's kind of random.
I'm not sure if you've noticed, but you tend to give unsolicited advice, and you tend to say things that were never asked for or asked about or brought up, etc. It's hard to explain. Like what you did here, you brought this up out of nowhere and are changing the subject to something that's completely unrelated. It's like, "huh?"
I apologize for reacting this way, but you've been doing this for a very long time. Like sometimes when someone is asking for help, you'll start bringing up all kinds of things that are completely unrelated and start recommending things that they never even asked about or have absolutely no interest in. It is confusing. So, try to avoid doing it. Try to stay on topic.
You don't have to apologize. Just, try to calm down a bit. :) If someone wants to know something, then they will ask. If someone wants advice on something, then they will ask for it. If someone is interested in something, then they will say so. Live and let live. ;) It's perfectly ok for others to not be enjoying what you're enjoying because y'know, it might not work as well for them as it does for you. So, never assume that everyone will love your ways as much as you do.
If you're thinking that I need to follow my own advice, then I would agree with you. I know that I tend to do the same thing, but I'm trying to put a stop to it. When someone is asking about something, or asking for help or whatever, just stick to what they asked or to what they're talking about and leave it at that. You will get a much better reaction that way. Or like in this thread, don't start talking about things that have absolutely nothing to do with the subject, especially if it's advice! There are a lot of things that I want to share with everyone, but I keep it to myself because really, if someone wants a better way, then they will ask for it.

@TwoCables well what kicked it off is I inverted my colors and everything was much darker and I liked it, and so a made a post about me liking it. Yes, it was very off topic.

Stuff like that happens to me all the time, but sooner or later you have to learn to just keep these moments to yourself because most of the time, they're just for you and you alone. When you sit with it for a while, it becomes clearer and clearer and clearer whether it's actually something worth sharing with others when you'd be kind of bringing it up out of nowhere.

@TwoCables @Tungsten_smooth This is really true, if there is one thing I have found while working on f.lux, it is that there is not one right answer for everyone. Our lives and preferences and biologies are SO different. And what works perfectly for you at 20 years of age, definitely won't be what works for you at 40, or at 60.
I find it is almost always okay to share what works for you, but just keep in mind that everyone's biology and schedules and needs are really different. And not everybody wants to be advised, either. By saying what you like, you're doing a service to the next person who comes along and reads your words. Food for thought!

@lorna @TwoCables Alright I'll tone it back on the suggestions and word them so that they aren't like a cure all, but instead more of "I enjoy using it this way, maybe that would be useful for you" etc. Thanks for being clear about it as well, that's always greatly appreciated.
So with that out of the way, I'd like to get back to the OP topic. Would it be feasible to send over random redditors to the sleep / light forum? Some of the posts don't get many good suggestions, and I have a feeling that if you all have enough time, you'd be able to offer solid advice to get them started. How would you feel about that?
-
I find that this doesn't just apply to f.lux. I'm a drummer, and I've learned that as a drummer, I need to keep my personal epiphanies and exciting discoveries to myself for a painfully long time before I can truly know whether they can or should be shared with others. I have to live with them for a while first. Y'know? 99.99% of the time, I find that I don't need to tell anyone what I've discovered because it's really just for me. If someone needs to know what I discovered, then I will see them asking for something that can be helped by what I discovered. Otherwise, I keep it to myself. The general rule of thumb is, no unsolicited advice.
Sometimes something you discover might not be true for you in a few weeks. So, that's another reason to live with it for a while first. Even so, after a while, you find that you never needed to tell anyone anyway.
It's one thing to help others and to have a giving heart and all that, but to help them with things they never even asked for help with can be annoying. It can cause people to take a step back like, "dude, all I asked for was this simple thing. Thanks for helping me with it, but I don't need all that extra stuff you told me."
So like I said, it's important to stay on topic. People see what we post, and so if they think they're going to get a bunch of unsolicited advice just for asking something simple, then they might not ever ask.
It would kind of be like if out of nowhere I started telling you that you should make the same changes to your diet that I just made. Or, that you should start making the same lifestyle changes that I just made. I hope you know what I mean.

@Tungsten_smooth I'm a big fan of /r/Sleep and I would be sad to take their traffic away. They already send us a fair amount of traffic when it's appropriate, and I think they do good work and always try to help people out. In terms of offering advice, we simply aren't qualified to diagnose or treat sleep disorders here, so I think it's better not to siphon anyone away from a good resource.
-
@lorna Alright, that's fine. I had a feeling you wouldn't want to recommend sleep advice as you've hinted that it's better to go to a sleep expert, which is cool too.
-
Yes, not just hinting, I loudly say that it's always better to go to a sleep expert. ^_^
-
Yeah, and we also don't need people holding us responsible if we end up giving bad advice. I think that it would be best to just keep everything the way it is because really, the only people who have enough time to handle everyone who comes through here are me and you, Tungsten_Smooth... heh, I should just call you Tim. It would be easier to type. Anyway, so yeah, having more traffic on here would get overwhelming.
-
@TwoCables Yeah, it would probably segment the two areas too much, and would get confusing.

At the moment, we are the only two who have enough time to handle people every day. Lorna barely has enough time to post one time per week. Michael, we're lucky to see him once a month. They're busy. So, more traffic on here would be a nightmare, especially if they were asking questions that we can't answer - and especially if we had to deal with impatient people. That would hurt this forum's reputation in a hurry.
Also, we don't need anyone holding us legally responsible for bad advice.
