Huge breaking issue on Early 2011 MBP 15" with latest version of macOS High Sierra

Today as I was using flux at around 7pm, the screen suddenly started to sputter and a bunch of black horizontal lines were on the screen. All of the content became blurry and it seemed really broken. I could still move the mouse and see some motion on the screen but it was unusable. After a few minutes, the OS automatically logged me out.
I logged back in, and after ten minutes (with flux), the screen "broke" again. Now, I've disabled flux and the issue has not come up again.
I really don't want to keep flux disabled; even though flux works in the background, after disabling it now I'm really seeing the difference. Hopefully there's a fix.
