My horror story with and without f.lux & 1 question about the lower setting for sleep
-
Yeah I think my sleep patterns have to get adjusted still thats why I am typing this at 3:14 in the morning. But my eyes are feeling slightly sleepy. I am just waiting for my room to cool down so thought I would type this.
I installed f.lux long ago and it helped me right away it was like someone gave my eyes a good 3 hours massage the first time I saw the transition happen.
Three months ago I had some personal problems and I was staying awake forcing myselg till 4 am.
My sleep patterns went haywire. During this time I was trying to watching a lot of youtube. I don't watch movies but since I was watching a lot of Key and Peel I thought let me downloaded Keanu. I decided to download a pirate movie only because it did not release in my country. Otherwise there was no way I was watching Keanu on the small screen.
And I downloaded virus/trojan horse cause I don't even know where to get them movies.
Then I found out and went about cleaning it during this time I was already stressed and some of the tools i used to clean the infection removed f.lux from windows startup.
I never noticed it was gone. I had to run all these tools in safe mode and since f.lux was not there in safe mode and I was doing this at night I kept doing it a lot I some of these tools remove everything from the startup.
I just did not notice it with all the restarting.
Then I got over the personal problem tried to sleep just could not. For 3 months I suffered.
Today I had to again disable twilight on my android(which I use cause there is no f.lux for android atleast the last I heard) to allow some permission to some apps. It does not allow it as long as there is an overlay.
That is when I noticed hey my monitor screen is brighter.
Ok I need to cut this shot I am feeling sleepy after 3 months and I need to sleep.
Long story short I reinstalled f.lux again as I did not see any way to put it on windows startup. And Boom My eyes were so calm...I almost cried...in joy and in regret.!!
Thank you f.lux and please is there an app for android I don't think twilight does the same as f.luxThanks for reading and now my question.
What temp do I use in the setting for better sleep. I see that there is lower setting than what f.lux automatically adjusts to.
So will that help me get better sleep as I really don't mind a weird looking screen at night as long as it just makes me more relaxed.
thanks -
@rawraj use 1900K (candle) on large monitors like 24"+.
Get uvex sct orange eye wear from online stores for $10 a pop. They block out all blue and cyan and a very large portion of green as well. That will help you to relax when around bright white light at night.

thanksAs I said in that giant post I just made in that other thread, f.lux by itself can be completely useless if you are still being exposed to alerting light from other sources. This includes all of your indoor lighting, your T.V., etc. F.lux by itself is only effective when you're otherwise avoiding alerting light, where the computer you have f.lux installed on is the last thing or only thing in the house that's still producing alerting light.
There's no magical color temperature to use. Having said that though, I recommend staying at or "below" 3400K. Meaning, 3400K or warmer. To go warmer, allow f.lux to expand the color range. However, I also recommend lowering your monitor's brightness quite a bit when you have f.lux set to the least-alerting color temperature that you can tolerate. I prefer 1200K, but I can tolerate this because when I'm getting ready for my approaching bedtime, I switch to these pure-red LED lights: http://www.feit.com/led-lamps/performance/performance_led/performance_led/color_leds/color_led/a19-r-led So I've actually found a way to make a change to the Windows Registry so that I can set f.lux to 800K during this time, which is about as red as it gets.
There's something else to consider too: how accurate your monitor's color is! For example: my monitor is well-known for being WAAAYY too blue. It's almost disgusting. So, I have it properly calibrated now, which means that my monitor's color production is far more accurate which means that when I have f.lux set to 800K, it really is at 800K (or as close to it as possible). When I have nothing but those pure-red LEDs on, 800K looks FAR better with my monitor properly calibrated than without.
Oh, and I also set my monitor's RGB values to be 50, 0 and 0. That is, 50% red, 0% green, and 0% blue. However, I'm just crazy like that. :) Of course, I also reduce my monitor's brightness down to just about 0. That doesn't mean the monitor looks like it's turned off, it just means it's as dim as it can possibly go. Some monitors that are better than mine can get this dim at a higher brightness level, which means their 0 brightness is dimmer than mine. Sometimes though I just use about 10-20% because it can sometimes be too difficult to read text at that low of a brightness.
One last thing: if you aren't able to do anything about the lighting in your house, then you can buy glasses that block out all alerting light and you can just wear those until you turn off all of your lights. Combined with f.lux, glasses like this can be extremely effective.

@Tungsten_smooth Thanks for the reply gotta search for it here locally online its more than $10 a pop for me in India. Its coming to around $125 for the only brand available that is Gunnars.
-
@TwoCables Thanks for the reply. I will try to change the setting limit and see if it help.
My room is pitch dark and I don't watch TV i only watch it while I have lunch sometimes in the day time I have an old CRT(cause I don't watch TV that much)
I can't mess with my monitor colors that way cause I am a web designer so I need my monitor calibrated for the web.I have a tubelight which I off at night. Nowadays I keep a Yellow/orange LED air purifier. Its a airpurifier with a LED light that is yellow and behind My closet so the light does not hit the eyes. But the light is really warm and relaxing almost like 3500k

@rawraj We recommend dimming your screen at night as well. And if it's possible the best thing is to see a black screen with light text.
You can see a model of how light affects your sleep at https://fluxometer.com/rainbow - this may help you make some decisions about settings.

@rawraj For lorna's advice on inverted colors or dark backgrounds and light text here are two ways:
F.lux's "Darkroom mode" option.
Use the Magnifier to setup inverted colors (and put the mouse into software color and match the screen). -
@Tungsten_smooth Thanks I am sleeping early I was feeling sleepy right now thanks to Flux being on. I just saw the notification so came to check it
I tried the Darkroom mode and my eyes started to get very fresh..Its not disturbing like the normal mode my eyes that were half open due to me feeling sleep just started to "wake up" and open wide in the "dark room mode"
It does not feel like a bad thing but I don't want to feel awake now so disabled it.
Any thoughts on that?
@lorna thanks for the link will check it out. And I want your thoughts on what I typed above
Thanks again -
@rawraj My thoughts on Darkroom or other? I personally love Darkroom for use at night, but I don't have lab data on how alerting it is. Melanopically speaking (the ipRGCs that impact your circadian rhythm) it has no measurable effect. The visual system is complex though, another active area of research.
