Updating Flux made 1200k look much darker

Hey i updated Flux and it suddenly made my screen look different.
I always used 1200k ember preset for everything, and it was perfect. But luckily, i had my old Flux folder saved on a different drive, and after i uninstalled the new version, i just launched the saved one, and i was very confused when the colours stayed the same :(
So what i did, i just went to WIndows 7 System restore utility in the control panel, and loaded up a back up from yesterday, and voila, my old good 1200k is restored.
Heres how it looked when it was all good: https://imgur.com/pW6KWX5
how it became after an update: https://imgur.com/KAHhf32
Is it possible to discover what actually happened? I m planning to make a windows reinstall and i realy want my good old 1200k look the same.
I tried tweaking settings in the updated version, but i could not find a preset that suited me like the old one did. My eyes actualy hurt a bit when i change something, maybe because i m too used to the old preset.
Would appreciate any help on that.
Your old 1200K is not actually 1200K. It looks more like 3400K to me. If I’m right (I’m about 99.99% certain that I am), then that would indicate you didn't expand the color range in Windows before. I am guessing that this time around, you allowed the color range to be expanded. So, what you are seeing now is the true appearance of 1200K. Yes, it really should look that red. 800K is very close to being pure red (if it isn’t actually pure red). So, that’s why 1200K looks as red as it does.
So, there’s nothing wrong here at all. If anything, I think it’s very odd that you were able to choose 1200K even though you didn’t expand the color range before because when you don’t expand the color range, you cannot make the color temperature any warmer than 3400K in Windows. Or perhaps there’s a new bug in f.lux that you discovered here where the user is allowed to choose color temperatures warmer than 3400K in Windows before expanding the color range even though they will never see that warmer color temperature.
Therefore, from now on, if you want the color temperature that you have come to know as 1200K, then just choose 3400K. However, you should know that color temperatures warmer than 3400K are far better for you during the last couple of hours of your day before going to sleep. So you should see this as a very good thing. After all, now you can finally make the color temperature warmer than 3400K for real!

Thank you for the reply. Well, you are 100% right about 3400k, making it that way makes my screen look the same. But the problem is that with all new\updated f.lux versions my eyes do hurt. I do not know what kind of magical bugged irrational f.lux version i used for 2 years straight, but i remember eyes stop hurting as soon as i do system restore. :(
Right now i m stuck with a new version, cuz i was a little stupid, and my backup f.lux updated itself. Not sure what to do now.
I wonder if there are any colour\sharpness adjustments f.lux makes to the screen, yep and i tried "use display data", both modes do not bring it back.

It sounds to me like this has nothing to do with f.lux, but instead I think it has to do with your Refresh Rate. You said that it’s better when you do a System Restore which tells me that you’re going back to a system state that has a higher Refresh Rate set.
So if I’m right, then that would mean you need to go into your display settings and set the Refresh Rate to the highest one available. Here’s how to do that:
- Open the Settings app
- Click ‘System’
- Scroll down and click “Advanced display settings“
- Click “Display adapter properties for Display 1“
- Switch to the ‘Monitor‘ tab
- Choose the highest ‘Screen refresh rate’ that you have available to you.
This should make the display much more comfortable for your eyes.
If this wasn’t the culprit (if you already had the highest Refresh Rate set), then I won’t know what to tell you because f.lux doesn’t do anything that would increase or cause eyestrain. Increased eyestrain at a computer can easily be due to a low Refresh Rate, especially when the eyestrain goes away after doing a System Restore.
If a low Refresh Rate was the culprit, then it’s an indication that you don’t have the proper driver installed for your GPU. That is, you’re probably using the generic Microsoft driver. It could also indicate that when you do a System Restore, you’re going back to a system state where you have a proper driver installed for the GPU which would explain why the Refresh Rate is higher when you do a System Restore. Again, this has nothing to do with f.lux.
If I’m right and you do have the generic Microsoft driver installed, then you need to manually perform a Windows update. If that doesn’t install a proper GPU driver, then I will help you get one installed.
Let me know what you find out.

I m always sitting at 75hz. I m using AMD Radeon drivers. The only moment when my eyes go wild is when i update f.lux. If i delete it, do system restore, and get back to the bugged version of f.lux where 1200k looks like 3400k, my eyes feel ok.
This whole situation is absurd, i understand. But thing is, i tried this multiple times. System restore could not change refresh rate or get old drivers back because i create a restore point, i update f.lux, eyes start to hurt. I delete f.lux, i restore the point i created 5 mins ago, and my eyes are ok again. Did this a lot of times, and it is like it is :(
Yep , i understand that there might be no solution to this, because it's almost not possible to understand what is actually happening. I was almost sure today i should buy a new monitor (i m using IIYAMA PROLITE 2492H, which is flickerfree), maybe a realy expensive one, but only if i was sure this would help.
Also, all this does not explain how could i live for 2 years with bugged flux, spending a lot of time with my pc, doing everything: working, gaming, watching movies, and f.lux was always at the same preset, and it was perfect.
I was thinking maybe its something f.lux does with the registry. I wonder what i need to do to 'bug' it again, lol.

Then don’t choose any color temperature that’s warmer than 3400K. I mean clearly, you don’t like anything under 3400K, so don’t choose anything other than 3400K or higher. I’m honestly surprised that you never noticed that every single color temperature under 3400K is identical to 3400K.

@TwoCables
Thanks for outgoingness! Well, i m not useing anything below 3400k. I was also suspecting that my bugged preset was not 3400k, it was something higher. Right now i m experimenting, currently stopping at 4050k, lowing and raising it 50-100 and trying to figure out what is ok to me, but still i got a feeling of a slight discomfort in my eyes. Maybe it's all placebo, and i just need to keep tweaking. -

My room is pretty dark most of the time, i only have 1 lamp. But it was never a problem.

Oh. I was beginning to wonder if maybe your lighting color indoors was closer to 4100K much like that of some fluorescent lights since you said that you begin to feel discomfort with f.lux set to about 4000K. I have noticed in my room that if I set f.lux to a color temperature that’s warmer than my room lights, then it can feel a little hard on my eyes. It seems I prefer a color temperature in f.lux that is either matched to or cooler than my lights.
So if that’s not the culprit, then I’m not sure what it could be unless it’s just a matter of using warmer color temperatures more often to perhaps finally get used to it. It took me a while to get used to it and now I can even use 800K with no problem. I still remember the first day I set the color temperature to even 3400K: I turned my nose up and almost uninstalled f.lux! lol
I know you’re not new to f.lux, but since you haven’t experienced any settings warmer than 3400K, it’s almost as though you haven’t really used it much yet. So, I can understand what it’s like to use these warmer color temperatures for the first time. As you get more and more accustomed to seeing these warmer color temperatures, you’ll be more comfortable with them.

I solved it. The problem was not the f.lux itself, but in so called Pixel dot-inversion. I can't say i understood right how it works, but briefly all LCD monitors are flickering on some brightness\contrast values. For example my IIYAMA flickers like mad at 79 and 81 brightness but goes smooth at 80. When i acitvate f.lux i get flickering at 3450, and 3350, but 3400 is perfect. There are also some monitor settings that make your screen flicker.
There's a visual test for that http://www.techmind.org/lcd/dotinvrgb2lb.html and an article that explains all this. I finaly understood why i had everything back to shape when i did windows restore.
Took me some time to google all this out. Maybe this will help someone having the same problem.
