Turn off Philips Hue lights
-
Hi!
I've recently bought a bunch of Philips Hue lamps.
(Just a tip for future updates - it wasn't clear/obvious at all when the pairing was successful). My issue is that I've spent a couple of weeks perfecting the lights so that they fit our lives perfectly, and for us that means different colors and brightness in different rooms. I paired them with f.lux, and it does all that's intended, but my problem is that I don't want the intended function. As my lights are already set to pretty specific colors and brightnesses, having f.lux adjusts them for me is just a problem. However, the function to automatically turn off the lights whenever the sun rises would be absolutely amazing. Is there any possibility to get this feature without f.lux changing the color/brightness of my lamps?
Thanks

Can't that be done with the Philips Hue app?

Oh my god, you're right, I don't know how I missed that!
Edit: Actually after further exploration I realized that you can only set it to start the lights in a specific light recipe. Ergo, all those specific colors and brightnesses I talked about would disappear and I'd have to walk through my home and readjust them all. Every single one. Every day. Also, if I leave for vacation the lights would still turn on and off, whereas if it was connected to f.lux that'd just happen when my computer was turned on - meaning when I'm actually home. -
Can you set a schedule in their app to make the lights just turn off at around sunrise time? I realize you'd have to keep adjusting the time to keep it matched to sunrise, but that's what I would look for if I had Philips Hue lights.
Or how about voice control? Why not just use a simple voice command to turn the lights off when you want them to turn off? For example: with Apple HomeKit (I have LIFX lights), I just say, "Hey Siri, turn the lights off ", or "Hey Siri, turn off the lights", or "Hey Siri, kill the lights", or "Hey Siri, lights off", or "Hey Siri, no lights", or "Hey Siri, cut the lights off", or "Hey Siri, turn the lights off dude!" hehe (there are lots and lots of different ways to issue almost any command in order to be compatible with the different ways people speak)

No need to adjust the time actually, in the Hue app I've set it to my address, so it knows when the sunrise is. After your previous message I fixed it so they all turn off at sunrise, and I have a JBL Link 10 so I can turn them on with voice controls. I have a girlfriend who is extremely sound sensitive though, and the fewer voice commands I can use the better. Also, it's just a minor thing, but I have a dog and when I work evenings I think it'd be nice if he didn't have to spend his last few hours waiting for someone in total darkness, and could see his toys etc.

One nice thing about smart lights is the ability to control them from anywhere in the world.

@twocables Yeah, obviously, but it would be ever smarter if it was completely automated.

It can be. I don't know about Hue, but with LIFX, I see the ability to set it so that it's 100% automated to the point where I would no longer need to do any kind of manual control whatsoever. However, I don't have a life where I can have my lights turning on and off on a schedule because I don't really have a schedule. So, I just gladly control them manually.
Can't you just create the schedule you want in the Philips Hue app?
To be honest, I'm not seeing much of a problem either way. If you can't create the schedule you want but you know when you want the lights to be on or off, then I would just turn them on or off in the app or with voice control at that time.
Maybe I'm not sure what you mean by "completely automated". If you mean that you'd like the lights to just know when you will be working evenings and when you won't be so that the dog won't be in the dark for a few hours. I don't know what you can do with the Philips Hue app, but you can create multiple schedules that you can enable/disable whenever you want.
