Latest Flux Version becoming Unresponsive after about 20-40 minutes consistently, and stopping color effects
-
Hello
Longtime user of flux (probably 5 or 6 years on personal and work computers). I use it mainly for the easy, consistent, reproduceable ability to manipulate the color warmth to a specific setting. I am a software engineer with eye issues that cause extreme sensitivity, and so I usually keep it around 2700K all the time.
I am using Flux v4.73 on an up to date Windows 10 laptop. I use a docking station and a dual monitor setup. I have used various dual monitor+docking station setups over the years with Flux v3 without issue. I had been using Flux v3 on my current setup for over 1 year without issue.
Since installing the newest flux v4 version, I have consistently been experiencing the program freezing within one hour of launch. Suddenly, my screen will revert to its standard color temp, and the flux application becomes frozen and unresponsive. The only way to bring it back up is to force kill it from the task manager - at which point I can restart flux and the cycle will repeat.
This is very frustrating, as manipulating color warmth is something I need for health reasons. I can easily manipulate the RGB ratio to the color warmth as a workaround to the flux issues.
However, I like the flux interface and the attention flux has drawn to the issue of screen temperature. I would love for this issue to be fixed so I can continue supporting and recommending flux to my peers.
Please let me know if you have any questions about my system/setup. I have reinstalled the latest version of flux a few times, fully uninstalling beforehand once, and also restarted my PC. Drivers were up-to-date and functional enough to work with v3 consistently. This appears to be a flux v4 specific issue.
Thanks

I'm having similar issues to Kev1313. Every hour or so f.lux dies and I need to use task manager to close the program so I can start it and be able to interact with the program. Trying to click the program in the taskbar doesn't bring up anything but a transparent outline of the program. Closing it out in the task manager doesn't get rid of the F.lux icon until you interact with it after closing the program.
Windows/Nvidia drivers are both up to date but I'm not aware of what else could be breaking the program on my end.
Is version v3 still in working condition? I want to use something so I don't get a blaring white screen out of the blue.

Yes, @375Degrees - you described the behavior I see exactly with the "transparent outline" comment.
And I tried to uninstall version 4 and install version 3 again (there appears to be a copy here https://forum.justgetflux.com/topic/3984/downloading-old-copies-of-f-lux). But this time v3 also was behaving erratically for me - it's almost like installing v4 did something to my driver configuration or messed with some flux internal settings that didnt uninstall completely. Or perhaps that v3 link has some issues.
And @375Degrees - if your monitor allows you to manipulate the RGB ratio you can manually apply a lower color warmth yourself as a workaround until this flux issue is addressed. Use the calculator on this page https://academo.org/demos/colour-temperature-relationship/ to find the RGB values, then just manually change them on your monitor accordingly. This is what I do in certain work settings where using flux is not allowed (security and compliance reasons).

@Kev1313 Dang, too bad about v.3. Thanks for the link to the manual demo, I'll try it out.

We had an issue with DisplayLink and are fixing this in 4.74. Posting soon.

This fix is the main download now.
-
Thanks @herf
I will download and test it out tonight.
-
It has been updating since yesterday, also.

Thanks. The issues in this thread seems to be resolved.
I am seeing some differences in color accuracy between v3 and v4, which I will note in a separate thread.
Is there a changelog to view the updates for each version? I'd like to pick one that works for me and stick with it.
Thanks
