if my location is entered, there should be an option to follow realtime sunset/sunrise rhythm. some of us work odd hours that change from day to day. setting f.lux to follow natural exterior light temperature just feels logical and non-disruptive.

That would require constant CPU and GPU usage, resulting in very fast battery draining (or a slow computer for those of us using a normal "desktop" computer). Also, if you choose "Classic f.lux", it gets rid of the Wake Up time feature, which means it only changes the color temperature at sunrise and sunset.

thanks, pretty much what i needed. switching to classic flux. guess that will do the trick.

though an option to manually set the transition length would be really cool (30/90/180 mins).

            You're welcome!

For the transition speed, you can control it, but it doesn't say exactly how long the transition will go for. In the f.lux options, there are 3 speeds:

            • Slow: Natural Timing
            • Medium: Adapt your eyes
            • Very Fast: Gaming

The reason why the setting "Very Fast" is called "Gaming" is, it is extremely short and therefore going to be the least disruptive to system performance.

In f.lux v3, there were only two transition times: 20 seconds, and 60 minutes. I think the reason why they don't add more granularity than just 3 settings is, they are always making an effort to avoid Feature Creep and also to avoid a problem where, if there are too many options or too much control over certain things, their average user will be confused and they won't know what settings to use (as though there are rules as to which settings they should use or something). The simpler everything is and the simpler everything is presented, the better - for the average f.lux user.

From what I have seen on this forum over the past several years, their average user is actually quite computer-illiterate and also easily confused by having too many settings to adjust, while people like me or you actually want more settings and more control. Most of their users just want to install f.lux and then forget about it. Only a very tiny fraction of their users want more settings and more control.

One seemingly obvious solution might be to add a settings area called "Advanced" or something to that effect. I think the reason they don't do it is, they don't want to create the possibility of someone finding it who is computer-illiterate and easily confused and then going, "Um, I found this Advanced settings area... I'm confused. What do I do here? F.lux is too difficult to set up and configure."

great answer, sums up my view of the average user as well.
              thanks for the effort.
