Help with search of Pixel Qi video output controller board.
-
I don't want a pixel Qi screen limited to a measly netbook--I want to be able to hook it up to any computer. Adafruit used to sell the controller board and screen combo, but that's been discontinued and I'm struggling to find it anywhere. If anyone spots it, either buy it or let me know. Computing outside should be the future, but something stopped it from happening so far.

I've found the two things I need, but I don't know how much longer they will be available. I don't need a netbook, and I found both the screens (ebay) and the controller board (don't remember the website, but bookmarked). It's less than $200, so when I have $400+ to play with I'll get it! Then I'll upload pictures to the forum if anyone would be interested. This is a forum about light and devices!

Hey man, can you tell me what website you found the controller board on? I'm also wanting to use a pixel qi screen with a normal computer. Cheers

@BenneB Absolutely, last I checked they had well over 100 units in stock, so I'm sure there will be plenty left.
Go to https://www.chalk-elec.com/ and go to the HDMI control board section, you'll find it there. I will not provide a direct link because bots and spam etc. You will want to convert an HDMI output (from something like a Pi, to the connection used with the Pixel QI which is LVDS. I have no guarantee that the board will be compatible, haven't been able to get the parts get, but if you're willing to try it, please let me know what happens as it does seem compatible.

@LulaNord There are several controller boards for these Pixel Qi screens on ebay. Heres an example http://www.ebay.com/itm/152463513128?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

@BenneB Thanks. I'd rather not order directly from china, but this is very nice. It's got VGA, DVI etc. My main concern is controlling the backlight, I don't know anything about how it works. I'm hoping there is a way to setup a simple switch on two cables.

@BenneB I have taken a look at that board-- but it does not seem to support USB input, like the original Pixel Qi controller does. In fact, none of the LVDS controller boards on eBay seem compatible with a Mac (which is what I have)... Any other suggestions?

@aleks Wait--so you say a mac--what type? Is the USB the only video output possible? In that case, you'll probably have to look at the SOL display, that connects with USB, specifically made to work with this. Here's what it looks like in comparison to a 15" screen, I wish they'd have been able to design larger screen.

It's about $500 I think.

Sorry, I'm new to macs-- what types are there? I mean, it's Apple-- but all macs are; what else do you mean?
There's also a FireWire output on it-- but I strongly suspect that FireWire is even more rare than USB, as far as screens go. It's just too bad that I already ordered a screen-- I was hoping there'd be a controller for it too, that I could buy.

@aleks Maybe go to the main website for that manufacturer? They have a LOT of different models, they make desktop machines (tower systems, called the Mac Pro), they make iMac which is a large 24-27" screen with the computer system built directly into the screen, and they of course make several different laptop styles. Click the "apple" icon in the very top left corner of your screen, and click "about this mac". What does it say?
