f.lux beta discussion

I LOVE F.LUX!!! It makes my HTPC (for TV) and work PC so less abrasive.
I did have a few features that would really help out in a home automation scenario:
- Simpler scheduling. I wanted to echo others comments that it is hard to get the precises schedule.
- Triggers Modes Manually. It would be great to be able to force the mode (daytime, sunset, bedtime) in the app from an external source (i.e. via the cmd line switch "flux.exe /mode:bedtime"). This would solve issue #1 as I could use my home automation system to control modes (it does already have a bedtime mode).

Just when I thought f.lux was dead and was ready to use Windows 10 Night light feature instead, a new update comes adding much more than welcome features! :)
Here's my feedback:- The option that extends the slider not only should extend it up to 9300k. but it should also extend it down to 800k.
- I like the color presets, but it's confusing they don't get affected by the temperature settings. For example, if I set it to Hymalayan salt lamp I wish I could make it less intense (not dimmer)? By increasing the temperature when needed. Makes sense? If I'm not wrong they are just slightly different (sometimes way different) color hues.
- Being able to set custom steps (including the ability to increase the number of them)/duration of the daytime/sunset/bedtime/+ phases from the UI for power users for special circumstances like the one someone brought up above. And being able to save them and then select them from the preset list in the upper right corner.
-- 3.5. If possible make it possible to select "Reduce eye strain" or "Macular light" or any of the other filters during a particular phase. I'd love to use Macular light during daylight then have it slowly transition into the regular ember light as the next phase approaches. - Being able to create custom color presets/hues from the UI! I would like sometimes to set an hypnagogic purple color reminicent of the retro color filter vaporwave videos you can find on YouTube :P (please, if that feature isn't coming soon, at least make it a preset, alongside "Emerald City" "Macular pigment" and the others!)
EDIT: Also please let us select a dim level alongside the temperatures of any phase! I have a tasker script on android that auto dims the backlight as night time approaches. Maybe make a "dim as it gets warmer" option (I think that was an option in f.lux 3?... or was it "warm as it gets dimmer?".. hm....)

4.20 is posted and updating.
- some lower-impact "background" changes, with fixes (I hope) for the reported cases where the f.lux colors go away
- Also added a "software mouse cursor" toggle in Options so you can get a non-white cursor more easily
-
@herf The software mouse cursor option works, and it's much appreciated :D
-
Just one thing: Do not overload f.lux with options! I like the usability of it as it is right now.

Yeah, he's working very hard on that.
-
@Alexx agree :)
-
@TwoCables Oh we overload it all the time. Shipping means removing everything that doesn't look like the finished product. That's what takes us so damn long

The option in f.lux v3 you're thinking of was for laptops where f.lux could warm up the color temperature when you reduced your laptop's brightness. That's all that was.
I think people would think it's a bug if their preset could be affected by their selected color temperature. After all, what if you select Blue Sky but you can make it red? That wouldn't make any sense and some people would hate that they have to select 6500K just to get their preset to look correct (at least based on its name). I mean, why have presets with these names if you can just make them be any color you want? Why not instead just select the color temperature you want with the slider instead and avoid the presets?
You can still press Alt+Page Down and Alt+Page Up to adjust the black level (a software brightness control). This can help make the Presets less intense. Or, just use the new keyboard shortcut for adjusting the color temperature until you get what you want, and avoid the presets altogether.

Michael and Lorna, I am very concerned about the software mouse cursor option because this will make the mouse cursor in many video games become invisible.
-
@TwoCables If that happens i will disable that option before playing :)
-
@TwoCables I never had any problems with the mouse cursor at all...

You will have to log out of Windows or restart Windows first, but yeah.

That's good, but when you force the mouse cursor to be rendered like this, some video games will end up with an invisible cursor.
I've been posting this fact on this forum for a couple of years now. So, I don't want any of you to think this is a problem with f.lux. It's not. It's Windows.

@TwoCables Right, I realize now it doesnt make much sense from a Kelvin standpoint. I guess a better approach would be just to be able to create new color presets, and adjust the color hue and intensity/white balance from there, as I mentioned in point 4. What if instead of Emerald City I want Sapphire City? Or Pink city? :P
Although I realize that detracts from the main point of the app, which is help reduce eye strain and help you sleep better. Focus on what matters first, this is something very low priority. -

I can already do that in the NVIDIA Control Panel.

With the new beta, my color temperature is always low when starting up the computer. Then to get the right daytime temperature, I have to click tray icon to open f.lux panel. Then it instantly changes to daytime. (No slow change).
