  • @lorna I'm using a desktop, so it's staying awake on A/C power. To conserve energy, I put the computer to sleep before leaving for work and wake it back up when I come home. As far as the Hue pairing goes, I realized my mistake: I had my computer wired to the main router vs the wireless router that I have my Hue bridge connected to. So once I connected it back to the wireless router and put a check in the box, f.lux started beeping and I pressed the bridge button and now it's all synced. Thank you so much!

  • Deleted some posts - let's keep on topic!

We appreciate hearing all requests - consider this an interim release, all reactions and opinions are appreciated.

  • @Sleepy excellent - glad it is working!

  • something strange is happening in f.lux.
I live in Lisbon and when i set the wake up to 5 PM (i work in the night shift) a blue line appears between nightime and bedtime (like a montain curve) wich is odd because changes color temperature to 6500K and then goes to candle mode when reaches bedtime. its annoying because my eyes are fine at 3400k and the color starts getting bright to 6500k then goes down to candle mode. PS: it only happens between 16:45 and 17:00.

  • @sitayi2308 could you send me a screenshot (OK to email - support at justgetflux dot com) of your settings? I cannot repeat this by setting to Lisbon and reproducing your time and settings....

  • @dreadnaut To respond, we are trying a couple of different settings out in the beta program. What makes the light you see interfere with sleep is a combination of timing, color, brightness, distance, content (and a bunch of individual stuff about you). So it is all a tradeoff and we are searching for the right defaults (and then from there, helping you customize the rest). The first release was set dimmer than we intended as we live in a house that's quite a lot darker than most at night, so we brightened it up.

  • @lorna sent ;)

  • @herf

Radeon HD 6970. Somehow it doesn't update color temperature after computer restart unless I open f.lux panel from task tray.

  • @Locheed Two questions: Is this with our 4.20 build? And also, are you using Windows 10? (I had enough trouble with our HD 6750 that I had to pull it from a test machine running Win 10 Anniversary. (This is unrelated to f.lux - just old drivers that aren't getting updated). I'm sort of upset about this because I thought I had one Radeon that supported XP-Win10, but no more.)

  • Hello! I'm using 4.20 beta on Windows 7 x64. The "Custom Colors" dropdown only shows me "Recommended Settings". I saw when someone commented it was a firewall issue, but I've looked at my firewall settings, and didn't see any obvious signs that f.lux or its website are blocked. So, what could be going on in my case? I was also using 4.18 at first, and was surprised that it didn't update automatically, even though I have it set to do so.

Overall, I'm enjoying the improvements in the new version. However, last night, it was bothering me with notifications that I don't need, such as "you wake up in 9 hours", and "you wake up in 8 1/2 hours" or stuff like that. Is there any way to disable such notifications, or could a setting be added to disable them?

  • @camartinez1229 yes sounds like you have a firewall that's blocking our update and our presets.
the "backwards alarm clock" can be disabled in "Options"

  • This post is deleted!

  • Thank you. I disabled the backwards alarm clock.

However, what should I look for in my firewall settings? Like I said, I've checked, and did not see any entries for the f.lux app, or any blocking justgetflux.com or its IP. Is there a specific URL or IP I should be looking for? I don't know.

  • @camartinez1229 Does internet explorer work at https://justgetflux.com/ ?

  • @sitayi2308 I replied to email, but this looks like your wake time is set at 1700, which means you might usually sleep from say 0900-1700? And then you're seeing a pop of daylight in the morning, before f.lux goes back to darkness.

The "fix" for this is to set your wake time a bit earlier. If you sleep in, you won't notice.

Interestingly, there actually is a "stable" night schedule that looks like this (a pop of light in the morning a couple hours before sleep). It's called a "skeleton photoperiod": https://www.google.com/search?q=skeleton+photoperiod - so if this is a schedule you need to maintain over the long term, this pop of light can actually be helpful, since it keeps you synchronized to the night schedule. f.lux has some early models of how to do this well, but we are improving them...

  • @herf Yes, I can open the website in Internet Explorer and Firefox.

  • @camartinez1229 antivirus? the flux.exe process should be able to make connections to our server justgetflux.com

  • @herf No, I don't have antivirus. I uninstalled f.lux since I had previously upgraded over version 3, and then reinstalled the 4.20 beta. I'm still missing the other custom colors--all I see is "Recommended Settings".

I then closed f.lux and reopened it, this time monitoring network connections using Netstat. It does establish a connection to the IP for justgetflux.com. So, I don't know now, what's going on.

Thanks for your answer. Being a beta, I'm not surprised to see experiments or a/b testing :)

Regarding the customization, please keep in mind the you can keep the UI simple by exposing additional options in the configuration file. Most users will be happy with the UI options, and others will be just as happy to dig in the config files and tweak values.

Separately, I can confirm the issue with the icon in the notification tray: when the session starts is always visible, whether the "Backwards alarm" option is enabled or not. This might be connected with the way you update the title/tooltip message, which make the icon appear as new to Windows. I would expect the icon to follow the user choice to hide it from the taskbar.

  • Hey,

Firstly. Great work. Love the update, especially with the two time colour change options. Only 1 issue so far.

When setting the disable flux for an application with a windows UWP (store) app, it disables flux for the ApplicationFrameHost. Therefore, if I disable Flux for the Netflix App, it will also disable for all other store apps, including settings etc.

  • @abulawright thanks - we will have to do better here!

  • @herf Yes it's build 4.20. I think HD6750 uses same drivers as my HD6970. Last Catalyst driver released and not a beta version of newer Crimson. Yes running Windows 10 Anniversary.

  • Does anyone remenbers the name of that feature in the non-beta version of f.lux that darkens the screen when you are in a website with dark colors and brightens up again when you go to a white colors website? well its back on beta version. its very cool.

I don't know what that is, but it's not f.lux that's doing it.

  • @TwoCables Yes it was a f.lux feature, you had to checked it to work but i dont remenber now. I think it was "dims screens as you backlight dims"

No, that setting was for laptops where f.lux would warm up the color temperature for you as you reduced your laptop's brightness.

  • @TwoCables You are right my friend. But i remenber when i was at a website with a black background the screens started to get more darker and when i changed to facebook the screen brightens again. We have that feature in beta version. try yourself.

Yeah, I have the beta version and that isn't happening on my computer. I think you have a dynamic contrast control turned on - it's not f.lux. My monitor can do exactly what you're talking about.

  • @sitayi2308 @TwoCables From your description I think this may be an intel feature, not f.lux. cheers

My monitor can do this with a built-in dynamic contrast control, but I could see how this can be done at the driver level too. I know it's not f.lux though. I've been using f.lux for nearly 5 years now.

  • @sitayi2308 you want to disable Intel DPST. Our version of this feature is different and has never been shipped :)

  • Oh, I like something here. I have the 'Very Fast' transition selected, and when I enable/disable f.lux, it is almost spot-on to the transition speed that I would prefer for the startup of f.lux (less than 1 second). With 800K and 'Very Fast' selected, the transition speed when enabling and disabling f.lux is very nice, but when f.lux is launched at 800K it's much slower (I'd say it's around 12 seconds). When using the keyboard shortcut to go from 6500K to 800K, it's about 3-4 seconds. 3-4 seconds is much better than about 12, but I would love to see 250-500ms.

  • @TwoCables yes this is our "perceptually uniform" transform kind of taking too long, because we didn't design it to go to 800K. We should revise this a bit, because it's too slow down there.

  • The "turn off f.lux when program x is running" feature is okay, but I would like to have a "turn on movie mode while program x is running" feature.

  • @El-Narizon yes me too. now how to make this simple and uncomplicated? :)

  • @TwoCables And I know it's not f.lux because I've been making it for like nearly ten years now 😂

  • What are your settings? Do you use "recomended settings"? Im using 2700k incandescent at nightime and candle mode at bedtime :)

  • @herf btw when f.lux is turned off while a software is running the Kelvin goes to 6500k, but my f.lux settings for daylight are 6000k, so watching a movie in the night makes the screen like needing sunglasses just a bit more than my default daylight setup...
So only the movie mode is okay, but a default time span of 2.5 hours independant from the movie length (or several parts of a series) is not okay for me.

  • Hi f.luxers,

thank you for your very nice software. I like it very much.

Is it possible to select "reduce eyestrain"-setting as my "it's daytime setting" ?

That would be very nice :)

  • @MalcomAce It's on our list but we didn't get it done yet. :)

  • Cool

  • Have anyone try flux beta in Win 10 Creators Update? It seems not working in startup. Could it be because the night light feature in setting?

  • This post is deleted!

  • Windows 10 has always taken quite a few seconds to launch startup items - we don't load immediately due to this limitation. It is launching fine on our machine. Can you check that it is allowed in task manager > startup?

He is talking about the problem where people are saying that they have to click the f.lux icon in order to get f.lux to take effect. So, the f.lux program is starting with Windows 10 just fine (that's not the problem), but it's not applying the set color temperature until they simply click the icon in the Notification Area.

I have seen others saying the same thing with the Creator's Update and the beta f.lux, so, like I said, this is a problem for everyone with the Creator's Update. I'm pretty sure you said at one point that you are aware of this problem and you are going to see if you can fix it.
