Please update this app - Add custom times for blue light filter
-
Dear F.lux team,
Your app is great and it does help me sleep better, but there is one suggestion which tons of people are suggesting too. I know a lot of people have said this, but I'm reminding you again. In my location the sun sets at 5 pm in the winter and rises at like 7 or 8 am. Please add an option to choose custom times as I don't want my screen to become warm at 5 pm (which is too early for me). Keep the option for the filter times to be based on sun, but also add acustom time option.
Thank you -
Never going to happen, people have been asking for years. Forget about it and move on to another product.
The authors of F.lux are incredibly arrogant and hypocritical, they heap insults on competing programs while brooking no complaints about their own code. There are far more responsive developers offering far better alternatives to F.lux, just use one of them.
That's what I have done. The only reason I'm commenting is because it's sad to see people sucked into the spin from the F.lux authors when their abilities and their software seem so limited compared to pretty much every competitor, even kids doing it one-man-band style.

@steviant Please don't be rude. You have NO idea what the devs are planning, me as well as several others on the forum who the devs have informed, know they are working on:
- Windows beta with many more features (like Mac has)
- Mac version which adds stuff
- Linux when they get time
- Android beta
- iOS when they get permission from Apple.
- Making devices that measure color spectrum cheaper (see http://fluxometer.com)
- Researching the best way to implement features by talking to experts and reading books.
- Helping on Twitter
- Helping on the Forum
- Raising a family!
The @ flux-team is a husband and wife team and they have a lot they would like to accomplish, and I'm sure it's hard to put projects in time slots.

@shantanubdas311 Thanks for your feature request. We have an update coming up soon that we hope will address your early sunset problem. We do our best to accommodate user requests.
@steviant this forum is our online living room. You're very welcome to hang out here with us, ask questions, and even complain, but one thing that you may not do is treat other people - including us - rudely.
-
@Tungsten_smooth you forgot one
• being polite to people when you'd really prefer to tell them off instead
-
I'll add that it's possible to give extremely negative criticism in a polite and friendly (and even constructive) manner. That way, a civil discussion can take place, instead of something much worse.
"When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things."
We grown-ups know better than to treat each other poorly in the way that children sometimes do. A child will treat another child poorly without any regret because they don't know any better.

@TwoCables thanks, we love feedback even though we aren't always able to incorporate it. And honestly, the only heaping scorn I think I've ever laid is on programs that claim to do something they measurably do not do. Regrettably that is approximately 100% of the clones out there. Nothing is more upsetting than the ones who happily charge people money but do not take the time to get truly educated about the known science.

@lorna Dear Lorna,
I'm trying to be as civil as possible. It's been ages (months or years) since you've promised to update the app. It's been a long time since you have provided updates. You've always promised to update the app since ages and no new update is there now. Adding a custom time filter is what I need. 5 pm is too early for the screen to become warm since it's far away from my bedtime (which is at 11pm). Please work at it. And don't stop all your updates. Try to make this program better and better.
Thanks

We're talking mostly about steviant.
Regarding the rest of what you said though, put yourself in their shoes and try to be patient with them. Michael and Lorna have very busy personal lives that includes trying to raise a family and continue their day jobs. F.lux doesn't provide them with any income; it's strictly voluntary, but they are still doing the best they can. Making the next version isn't as easy as you think. It's not just a matter of just adding your feature and then giving it to you. It's FAR more involved and far more complicated. One of the problems with making software like this is, you have to make it work on several different operating systems. That's just the tip of the iceberg too.
Rest assured, they are working on the new version.They aren't going to stop. They are determined to make this program better and better. Just keep in mind though that they don't have as much free time as they used to. So, please be patient with them. Stop pressuring them so much.
In the meantime, stop allowing f.lux to work automatically. When you want a warmer color temperature, change it yourself. It's not as bad as you think. I love operating f.lux 100% manually. I prefer it, actually.

@shantanubdas311 You are just fine my friend - I appreciate your request and the way you worded it, especially the kind words that came with it - my comments were not reflective of your post in any way. I am very sorry for making you feel badly! We would love to have your help with beta testing when it's time. If you're willing, would you shoot me a chat message with the email I can write you at?

Even though some customers could have expressed this in a kinder manner, I also think that more customisability would significantly improve the user experience. I would like to be able to shorten sunset time by a couple of hours, or set a continuum between sunset and bedtime rather than a sudden change, or decide to postpone bedtime a little bit. I understand the software is designed with attention to research on circadian cycles, and that is great, but I still think there needs to be some degree of flexibility. The user interface could contain contextual information so one can understand why a certain timing is recommended, and why there must be a minimum amount of hours without bright light, without forcing people to do so, if they don't want to. I am also wondering how the screen brightness has an impact on melatonine generation. I keep the brightness of my screen quite low, so when bedtime time comes, it gets really dark, too much to be able to work comfortably. Fine if it's 30 min/1h before going to bed, but 2-3 hours in advance, it's not ideal. Of course I can set custom colours but then I can't have a properly dimmed screen right before going to bed. I would definitely consider making another donation, the moment that this was implemented. Thanks for your efforts.
